I’m Amélie, a French-Mauritian illustrator specialising in picture books and narrative illustration.
I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. Like many children, I started by redecorating bedroom walls before eventually moving on to my parents’ furniture, school supplies, and every item of clothing I owned. Once paper became the only socially acceptable surface left, I spent years obsessively studying Disney characters, especially Ariel’s fringe and the impossible architecture of Belle’s ball gown.
After studying visual communication, I worked briefly as both a graphic designer and a bookseller before finding my way back to children’s literature, the place that had quietly shaped me from the beginning. Since then, I’ve illustrated around 40 picture books published in the French, English, and Korean markets, with several titles later translated into additional languages. Alongside publishing, I’ve also worked on editorial projects, games, and visual commissions. One of my favourite projects involved creating painted signage for a hospital daycare, turning an ordinary space into something warmer, softer, and more playful.
My work is heavily inspired by atmosphere, memory, seasonal rituals, folklore, cosy interiors, food, and the emotional texture of everyday life. I’m drawn to imagery that balances comfort with strangeness, blending nostalgia, humour, melancholy, and occasional nonsense. I’m especially inspired by old bookstores, crowded cafés, celebrations, and worlds that feel both intimate and slightly strange.
These days, I live in the countryside with my boyfriend and our cat, Chichi. While the quiet rhythms of rural life deeply influence my work, I regularly find myself drawn back to cities like London or Paris, wandering through bookstores, cafés, museums, crowded streets, and restaurants in search of inspiration, movement, and sensory overload.
When I’m not working, I’m usually reading, playing video games, or planning my next city escape.
